Wine Class – Terroir Focus: High Elevation Wines

January 31 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Taste wines grown in high elevation vineyards with Anita Bender.

Terroir – this French word is for the idea that wine should express a sense of where it was grown. Perhaps the closest English translation is “placefulness.” It encompasses all the characteristics of vineyards – climate, soil, elevation, orientation – each of which can have a surprising impact on the final wine. In our Terroir Focus classes, we want to shine the spotlight on a specific aspect of terroir and see how it expresses itself in wines from around the world.

In our High Elevation class, we will focus on wines that come from high altitude locales. Vineyards perched atop steep slopes offer more than just romantic vistas – the wines grown in these extreme spaces are often highly prized for their unique attributes. High-elevation wines can exhibit bright acidity due to cooling mountain breezes but are also often rich in tannin due to thick skins developed amidst great UV exposure. In any case, elevation feeds into the concept of terroir that makes where wine is from an inescapable feature of its being.

Must be 21+ to attend.
