FARGO, N.D. — The Fargo Theatre has announced that legendary actor Peter Stormare will appear in person for a special screening of the Coen Brothers’ classic film, Fargo, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
The event marks a major milestone for the historic venue, serving as the launch of the theatre’s Centennial Film Series and a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the 1996 Academy Award-winning masterpiece. Stormare, known for his chilling portrayal of the silent but violent criminal Gaear Grimsrud, will participate in a live Q&A session immediately following the 7:00 PM screening.
About Peter Stormare and the Role of Gaear Grimsrud
A veteran of both stage and screen, the Swedish-born Peter Stormare has built a career playing iconic, often eccentric characters. While he is well-known for roles in The Big Lebowski, Constantine, and John Wick: Chapter 2, his performance in Fargo remains a career-defining turn.
In the film, Stormare plays Gaear Grimsrud, the taciturn “blond” half of the kidnapping duo hired by Jerry Lundegaard. Grimsrud is remembered as the film’s most terrifying presence—a man of few words and sudden, explosive violence. The character’s cold efficiency culminates in the film’s most infamous scene involving a woodchipper, a moment that has since become a permanent fixture in cinematic history.

The Legacy of ‘Fargo’ and the City of Fargo
Released in 1996, Fargo was a critical and commercial success, earning seven Academy Award nominations and winning two (Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Frances McDormand). Despite its title, the relationship between the film and the city is one of irony and cultural branding.
Interestingly, no scenes of the movie were actually filmed in Fargo. The production took place primarily in Minnesota. Only the opening scene is set in a fictitious Fargo bar, where the kidnapping plot is hatched. The Coen Brothers famously chose “Fargo” as the title simply because they liked the sound of the word, believing it was more evocative than “Brainerd,” where much of the film’s action takes place.
Of local interest, Kristin Rudrüd, who plays kidnapping victim Jean Lundegaard in the film, is a Fargo native. She attended Fargo North High School and Moorhead State University. Rudrüd also acted in Pleasantville, Drop Dead Gorgeous, and Chicago Hope and was a founding member of the Fargo Film Festival.
Over the last three decades, the city of Fargo has leaned into the movie’s fame. The original woodchipper prop from the film is a major tourist attraction, housed permanently at the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center.
