Wine Class – The Judgement of Paris
50 years ago, a group of French wine experts gathered for what was to become one of the most momentous events of the modern wine industry, but at the time, they merely thought it was a simple tasting. Hosted by Steven Spurrier, a British Oenophile who owned a Parisian wine shop, this tasting pitted wines from the then-little-regarded wineries of California against the stalwarts of fine French viticulture. To the participants and observers, there was little doubt as to which wines would rank the best – French wine was of course, second to none, even if California was coming along nicely. Yet the results of this blind tasting rocked the world: California wines beat both the red of Bordeaux and the white of Burgundy. The press gave the seismic and somewhat mythological moniker “The Judgement of Paris.”
In this class, Evan Christie and Romayne Kilde will lead you through a blind tasting of Chardonnays from California and Burgundy, as well as Red wines from Napa and Bordeaux. Some of these will be the exact same wineries featured back in 1976, while others will be the closest approximation we can find in the modern world. You will have the chance to judge for yourselves, 50 years on, what these competing wine regions really have to offer. Come for a dose of history and samples of truly exceptional wines!
Must be 21+ to attend.
