North Dakota Natives Kat & The Kodachromes Announce New EP ‘Jack of All Trades’

Last updated:

MINNEAPOLIS — Kat & The Kodachromes, a Minneapolis-based indie rock quartet featuring three North Dakota natives, has announced the release of their sophomore EP, Jack of All Trades. The four-track collection drops on Friday, January 2.

Roots in the North Dakota DIY Scene

While the band currently operates out of the Twin Cities, the lineup features significant ties to the North Dakota music community. Three of the group’s four members—guitarist and vocalist Kat Kirschmann, drummer Max Wilson, and bassist Josie Gereszek—came up through the DIY scenes of Fargo, Minot, and Bismarck.

The members bring experience from well-known regional projects to the current lineup. Wilson is known in the Minot area for his work in the fast-core duo VHS Dust, while Gereszek previously performed with the Fargo surf-punk group Free Truman.

From North Dakota to Minnesota

The new release was recorded late this summer at Soft Cult Studios in Minneapolis with engineer Jaxon Vesely. The record features a “power pop and rock ‘n’ roll” sound that reflects the chemistry of the current lineup.

The transition from North Dakota to Minnesota serves as a thematic backdrop for parts of the record. The track “Alienated,” which receives its formal release on this EP, was written during Kirschmann and Wilson’s initial relocation to the Twin Cities.

“[Alienated] is one of the first songs I wrote when Max and I first moved to the Cities,” Kirschmann said. “It’s ironic that it comes out when I no longer feel the way I did when I wrote the lyrics, but so it goes. I can still identify with my former self, and hopefully others can, too.”

Other tracks include the critique-heavy opener “Big Beautiful Bill,” the optimistic “Better Than Nothing,” and the Omnichord-driven closer “Is it a Memory?”
