The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County will host the Hjemkomst Monster Ball from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, at the Hjemkomst Center.

The Hjemkomst Monster Ball will feature live, local music in the Hjemkomst Ship Gallery, including Hot Lunch at 6:00 p.m. and the Jessica Vines Band at 7:00 p.m. Classic horror movies will be screened on the Hjemkomst sail, a Games To Go Carnival will be offered throughout the museum, and the cast of local “spooky-movie” icons “Madd Frank Presents” will be offering a meet-n-greet. Appetizers and snacks will be served, included with admission, and a cash wine & beer bar will be available.

The event takes shape as HCSCC exhibits a large collection of vintage toys, posters, films, and commercials called “America’s Monsters, Superheroes, & Villains: Our Culture At Play.” The exhibition opened at the Hjemkomst Center on Tuesday, October 1, and comes from the private collection of a Minneapolis-based organization named SuperMonster市City! It will be on exhibition at the Hjemkomst Center through January 31, 2020.

During production of “America’s Monsters, Superheroes, & Villains,” HCSCC produced a supplemental exhibition called “Weird FM” to highlight Fargo-Moorhead’s own local monster lore. Having opened both in October, the organization decided a Halloween party would offer a fun opportunity to showcase these stories, including those of “Madd Frank Presents,” KVRR’s late-night TV show that introduced B-horror movies to an international audience on Friday and Saturday nights from 1985 to 1995. Several of the show’s stars, including Del Dvoracek’s “Madd Frank” and Martin Jonason’s “Ichy Bodd” will be in attendance to chat with visitors, take photos or sign autographs.

“We’ve been looking at all of these wonderful records of big, community-wide Halloween parties, going back to the 1870s, from carnivals at the Barnesville High School to formal masquerades at Fargo’s Crystal Ballroom. We thought it would be really fun to carry on that tradition…and to dance in costumes around our Viking ship,“ HCSCC’s program director Markus Krueger said.

Admission to the Hjemkomst Monster Ball is $20, but college students will receive free admission with a current student ID. Visitors interested in joining the historical society may also purchase an “R.I.P.” ticket that includes event admission, two drink tickets, and museum membership. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.

The Hjemkomst Monster Ball is sponsored by High Plains Reader and Fargo Underground.
