A Country and Gospel Music Legend
Born James Travis Tritt on February 9, 1963, in Marietta, Georgia, Tritt taught himself to play guitar at age eight and began writing songs by age 14. Before achieving commercial success, he worked various blue-collar jobs, including in air conditioning and furniture, while performing in local clubs. His musical style is distinct for blending traditional country with heavy influences of Southern rock (The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd) and gospel, distinguishing him from the more pop-oriented “hat acts” of his era.
Tritt rose to fame as a member of the celebrated “Class of ’89,” a group of artists including Garth Brooks, Clint Black, and Alan Jackson who redefined country music popularity in the early 1990s. His debut album Country Club (1990) produced his first Billboard No. 1 hit, “Help Me Hold On.”
Throughout the 90s and early 2000s, Tritt released a string of defining anthems, including “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares),” “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” “Anymore,” and the modern classic “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” To date, he has seven Platinum-certified albums and more than 30 million in career album sales.
Tritt’s fusion of styles has earned him critical recognition, including induction into the Grand Ole Opry in 1992. He has won two Grammys, both for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. The first was in 1992 for “The Whiskey Ain’t Workin’” (with Marty Stuart), and the second in 1999 for “Same Old Train.” He is a three-time CMA winner, notably receiving the prestigious Horizon Award (now New Artist of the Year) in 1991.
Beyond music, Tritt has established an acting career, appearing in films such as Rio Diablo, The Cowboy Way, and Blues Brothers 2000. In recent years, he has returned to his roots as an independent artist under his own label, Post Oak Recordings. His latest projects include the studio album Set In Stone (2021) and his debut gospel album, Country Chapel (2023).
Tritt established his own label, Post Oak Recordings, in 2012. His recent releases include the 2022 studio album Set In Stone and the 2023 gospel album Country Chapel.
