Island Park Pool Sets Attendance Record Following Renovation

FARGO, N.D. – The newly redeveloped Island Park Pool has achieved a new milestone, setting a seasonal attendance record with over 55,316 visitors to date this summer. This figure surpasses the previous record of 46,784, which was set at Davies Pool in 2012, highlighting the community’s positive response to the facility’s extensive upgrade.

Project Funding and Community Support

The transformation of the Island Park Pool was made possible through a collaborative effort, combining both private contributions and broad community backing. The project received a significant boost from a seven-figure lead gift by Ray and Kathie Kvalvog, made in honor of their sons, Zach and Connor. This landmark donation was a critical factor in the reimagining and revitalization of one of Fargo’s most cherished recreational spaces.

Craig Bjur, Executive Director of the Fargo Park District Foundation, emphasized the importance of this support. “The generosity shown throughout this campaign reflects a strong community commitment to wellness, youth development, and the value of public spaces,” he said. “Early leadership gifts like Ray and Kathie’s were absolutely critical to the project.”

In addition to the Kvalvog family, the project was supported by numerous donors, including SCHEELS, the Morris family, EagleRidge Companies, Sanford Health, the Hulbert family, the FM Gators, the Griggs family, and the Richardson family. This broad-based support was instrumental in creating an inclusive, updated space that honors the legacy of Island Park while serving the needs of future generations.

New Features and Public Enthusiasm

The renovated facility now boasts the Zach and Connor Kvalvog Family Competition Pool, an eight-lane, 50-meter pool designed for competitive swimming. It also features a 5-meter diving platform, 1- and 3-meter diving boards, and the popular “Fly Time Slide,” which has become a major highlight for visitors of all ages.

According to Dave Klundt, Aquatics Manager for the Fargo Park District, the community’s enthusiasm has been evident. “This summer has been an incredible demonstration of community enthusiasm for the new pool,” he stated. “We’ve averaged nearly 950 visitors each day we’ve been open, which speaks volumes about how well this space is serving our residents.”
