About the Stray Cats

Formed in Massapequa, N.Y., in 1979, the Stray Cats revolutionized Rockabilly with their infectious energy and retro style. Guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer, upright bass player Lee Rocker, and drummer Slim Jim Phantom brought the ’50s aesthetic into the modern era. Their chart-topping hits include “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town,” “Stray Cat Strut,” “(She’s) Sexy + 17,” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way.”

The Cats brought Rockabilly music back into the record charts in the early 1980s. They had several big hits on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to their striking visual 1950s style, which was updated with exaggerated pompadours and colorful tattoos. Their music showcased genuine musical talent reminiscent of rockabilly’s original heyday. The rhythm was rock solid yet loose, the singer could croon or shout, and the guitar playing demanded respect. Their music was elegant yet hard, jazzy yet completely rocking. Their music and style were unique and unlike anything else in pop culture at that time.

The Stray Cats became popular in 1981 with the release of their self-titled album. It included hits such as “Runaway Boys,” “Rock This Town,” and “Stray Cat Strut.” They signed with EMI America and released their U.S. debut, “Built for Speed,” in 1982. The album was a success, helped by heavy airplay on MTV. Their second American album, “Rant n’ Rave With the Stray Cats,” came out in 1983 and included hits like “(She’s) Sexy + 17” and “I Won’t Stand in Your Way.”

The Cats were active from 1981 to 1984. They reunited in 1988 until 1992 and had a one-off reunion show in California in 2003. This led to a month-long summer tour in Europe to celebrate their 25-year career and the 50th birthday of rock and roll. The tour was a hit, and a decision was made to record a live DVD and album. “Rumble In Brixton” was recorded at the sold-out show at the legendary Brixton Academy in London, where the atmosphere was electric and the energy was vibrant, almost dangerous.
