Red River Market Teaming Up With Local High School Students For Food Drive

Fill The Truck at the Red River Market

In celebration of National Farmers Market Week, Red River Market is teaming up with local high school students to host a food drive this Saturday at the Red River Market.

Red River Market is hosting its inaugural Fill The Truck Food Drive this Saturday, August 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Broadway Square. In honor of National Farmers’ Market Week, the Red River Market is partnering with the Great Plains Food Bank and Veggies for the Pantry to raise money and gather food to fight food insecurity.

In the Fargo-Moorhead community, food insecurity is a widespread issue that affects many families. 1 in 4 children are experiencing food insecurity in North Dakota. Last year, 36% of individuals served by the Great Plains Food Bank were children. North Dakota only has one food bank to service all 762,062 people who call this state home.

Red River Market is working with local high school volunteers to organize the food drive. “Volunteering at the Red River Market and the Great Plains Food Bank has shown me the important role our community has in fighting food insecurity,” said Davies High School student and Fill the Truck Organizer, Lindsey Jiskra. “Market-goers have a real opportunity to help fight this ongoing issue.” Jiskra shared their goal is to surpass 1,800 pounds of food and fill the iconic Red River Market truck bed.

All proceeds and goods will be donated to the Great Plains Food Bank and YWCA Cass Clay through Veggies for the Pantry. To achieve their goal, the Fill the Truck Food Drive will accept produce, non-perishable food items, hygiene products, diapers, and pet food. Cash and Venmo donations will be accepted on-site.

The food drive is being held in celebration of National Farmers Market Week which highlights the value that local markets bring to their communities.
