HCSCC Receives Grants for Upcoming Art Quilt Exhibition

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) is excited to announce an upcoming exhibition at the Hjemkomst Center: Quilt National ’15. The exhibition is produced and circulated by The Dairy Barn Arts Center, located in Athens, Ohio, as the 19th biennial juried exhibition in this series of innovative art quilts, and it will open in Heritage Hall on July 1.

HCSCC’s efforts to bring an exhibition of this caliber to the Hjemkomst Center were funded in part by a grant from the Lake Region Arts Council through a Minnesota State Legislative appropriation, as well as sponsorships from the Quilters’ Guild of North Dakota and the Minnesota Quilters. The exhibition will remain on display through October 10.

The collection of fine art textiles showcases the work of fiber artists from 33 states in the U.S., as well as 8 foreign countries. The quilts themselves depict a broad range of colors, textures, and imagery that highlight a broad array of themes, from art history to philosophy to contemporary social justice. As Judy Schwender, one of the exhibition jurors, notes, the exhibition shows the larger world “that quilting is an art form on a level with traditional fine art mediums.”
