For the Love of Ugly Food

A report from the National Resource Defense Council estimates that 40% of food resources in the United States go to waste each year.

In order to address some of the causes and problems that result from food waste, Ugly Food People of the North has formed – a group committed to bringing awareness and education around food waste and improving food sustainability practices in the Red River Valley.

“Ugly food” is the blanket term that encompasses foods that never make it to grocery stores, farmers markets, or other food retail outlets because they don’t meet strict aesthetic guidelines. One of the factors impacting our nation’s high volume of food waste is that consumers are unwilling (or in some cases, unable) to purchase and utilize these perfectly edible fruits and vegetables. In collaboration with the Red River Market and Drekker Brewing Company, Ugly Food of the North invites the public to an Ugly Food Market & Potluck.

Prizes will be given for the best-tasting dish and ugliest food. We’ll eat, drink and start a conversation about reducing local food waste.

For those unable to make a dish to bring to the Potluck, a $5 donation is suggested. Both events are free and open to the public.
