Wine Class – Carignan

While most often found in regions of Southern France, either as a single varietal or blending grape in Languedoc and Cotes-du-Rhone blends, Carignan actually originates from Spain, where it is known as Cariñena or Mazuelo. This medium-bodied grape is known for being very fruity and food-friendly, and grows quite hardy in warm climates, as it doesn’t need as much water as other grapes. As a result, it is actually seeing quite a bit of growth in California as well, as a good alternative to Cabernet, Merlot, and Zinfandel, and there are a good number of plantings of old-vine and dry-farmed Carignan, particularly in regions like Sonoma and Mendocino County.
