Wine Class – Carignan
January 18, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm

Join Certified Sommelier Joshua Voytek on an exploration of various expressions of the Carignan grape. While most often found in regions of Southern France, either as a single varietal or blending grape in Languedoc and Cotes-du-Rhone blends, Carignan actually originates from Spain, where it is known as Cariñena or Mazuelo. This medium-bodied grape is known for being very fruity and food-friendly, and grows quite hardy in warm climates, as it doesn’t need as much water as other grapes. As a result, it is actually seeing quite a bit of growth in California as well, as a good alternative to Cabernet, Merlot, and Zinfandel, and there are a good number of plantings of old-vine and dry-farmed Carignan, particularly in regions like Sonoma and Mendocino County. If you are a fan of complex, fruit-forward red wines, particularly in these winter months, come learn about the value and flavor that Carignan wines from around the world can provide.
