History of the Stockwood Fill Railroad Construction: Join Mark Peihl to learn about local railroad history

February 22, 2024 @ 6:00 pm

Explore local railroad history with a presentation on the Stockwood Fill by historian Mark Peihl.

Have you ever wondered why the railroad is up in the air between Glyndon and Hawley? Explore the building of the Stockwood Fill and the bitter lessons learned by the Northern Pacific during construction. This free presentation will feature Mark Peihl from the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County.

As the ancient glacial Lake Agassiz drained away thousands of years ago, a rich prairie with complex soils took its place. The Northern Pacific Railway learned this geology the hard way between 1906 and 1909 while building a railroad grade between Glyndon and Hawley, Minnesota. The steep beach ridges of an ancient lake presented a formidable challenge. Learn about this local history with a free presentation at your library.
