The Book as Art and Culture – Presented by Anna Arnar, Ph.D Art History professor at MSUM
December 13, 2023 @ 6:30 pm
We all love books, but do we always recognize the enduring power of the book as a cultural symbol? Join author Ann Arnar, Ph.D. (“The Book as Instrument: Stéphane Mallarmé and the Transformation of Print Culture”) for a presentation based on works showcased during multiple art exhibits, which feature artworks addressing broad themes such as the sociability of books, the collective memory of libraries and more from artists from different parts of the globe. The author will highlight artists who transform the text into multi-media pieces, changing the text from a static object into a dynamic tool experienced throughout time.
Ann Arnar, Ph.D., authorizes “The Book as Instrument: Stéphane Mallarmé and the Transformation of Print Culture.” Arnar’s book examines the French Symbolist poet’s engagement with the material and cultural dimension of books in society. She is a professor of Art History at Minnesota State University Moorhead and an Art Historian specializing in print culture.
