Native American Heritage Month; Bryan Akipa Public Performance

FreeNovember is Native American Heritage Month — Artists in School Residency
Three Rivers Arts Council, with funding from Lake Region Arts Council and in-kind support of Breckenridge Public School and local arts promoters, is pleased to present Bryan Akipa public performance as part of artist residency at Breckenridge Public School.
Bryan Akipa and Will Crawford (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate) will provide classroom and music activities through the week of November 27-30. Lise Erdrich (Turtle Mountain Band) will provide in-kind elementary class presentations on art, history, and books November 7-8.
Akipa, former K-12 teacher has worked in the education system and around the U.S. and world as a cultural ambassador, musician and traditional arts practitioner sharing his lifetime effort and knowledge with the public. Akipa’s honors and awards include:
- 2023 SDSU College of Fine Arts Hall of Fame Recipient
- 2016 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow
- 2017 South Dakota Governor’s Award South Dakota Living Treasure
- Recording Artist, Multiple Native American Music Awards (NAMMIES)
- Numerous shows and awards for Visual, New Media and Traditional Arts
Will Crawford is a K-12 educator and gifted musical and traditional arts practitioner working with schools and public at Hoċokata Ti, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s cultural center and gathering space. Its mission is to interpret and encourage traditional Mdewakanton Dakota cultural heritage, language, and history by sustaining this inherent knowledge for the community through exhibitions, preservation, and education. Crawford will join Akipa in performance and narratives around Dakota history and culture
