Cocktails Class – Tiki Drinks
January 25 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
In our historical survey of cocktail eras, there is possibly none more joyful and exuberant than the golden age of tiki. Bursting onto the scene just after prohibition ended, the tiki era went strong for several decades, creating a new genre of drinks that, while lavish, held on to the best of practices when it came to balance and harmony. At its best, tiki combines over-the-top tropical decor (usually of judicious provenance) with strong, rum-based drinks, which adhere to the basic punch form by combining and balancing the elements of strong, sour, sweet, weak, and spice. Unfortunately, this finesse would be lost over time, and tiki saw itself reduced to overly sweet drinks served in chain restaurants. Luckily, we can thank the research of enthusiasts like Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and Martin Cate for helping to revive the history and true spirit of tiki so we can enjoy the classics today.
In this class, Evan Christie will guide you through the origins and growth of the tiki craze while mixing classic and modern tiki drinks. Expect rum but also other spirits to make an appearance. These drinks have a crowd-pleasing quality while never losing that deep sense of craftsmanship. Come break through the winter gloom with a little tiki magic!
Must be 21+ to attend.
