Cocktail Class – The Bar-Tender’s Guide
November 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
When it was published in 1862, Jerry Thomas’ The Bar-Tender’s Guide was (probably) the first cocktail book ever published in the United States. Before this, recipes were passed only from saloon keeper to saloon keeper, person to person, in the ad-hoc manner of a disorganized guild. Though intended as a manual for other bar professionals, The Bar-Tender’s Guide would prove popular with punter and publican alike and go through many editions (some with alternate titles such as How to Mix Drinks and The Bon Vivant’s Companion). Though it eventually went out of print, the rediscovery of the book by cocktail enthusiasts in the late 1990s and early 2000s would spur the cocktail renaissance.
In this class, Evan Christie will continue his series on cocktail books by mixing up classic recipes from The Bar-Tender’s Guide. Expect classic, historically important drinks, some utterly familiar and others lost in the mists of time. You will taste flavors from a bygone golden age but also see the roots of all modern mixology. Join us from this historical exploration of the cocktail.
Must be 21+ to attend.
