Tunic Bringing Melcholoy and Chaos To The Aquarium May 3

Tunic, a punk band from Winnipeg, makes chaotic but emotional music that explores daily anxieties. Their latest album, Wrong Dream, produced by Seth Manchester and Drew Riekman, delves into themes of integrity, grief, and tumultuous relationships. With nine unpredictable tracks, Tunic continues to push the boundaries of creativity and intentionality.

Schellenberg developed Wrong Dream during a time of personal change. He had a stable job and financial security but struggled with his identity as an artist while conforming to the capitalist system. He woke up early every day to challenge himself to write songs independently.

“I wasn’t living in a shitty apartment anymore,” Schellenberg says. “I was the happiest I’ve ever been, but also, I lost myself to capitalism and was struggling with my identity of who I am: Can I still call myself an artist if I work 40 hours a week?

Schellenberg challenged himself to create songs using only bass and keyboards. The lead single, “Whispering,” explores the conflicts that arise in relationships. “My Body, My Blood” also delves into interpersonal turmoil. The album’s most melancholy song is minimalistic yet complex.

Tunic’s Wrong Dream explores life choices through a blend of post-punk, hardcore, post-rock, and math rock. Schellenberg’s vocals on ‘Sounds Repeat’ set the tense tone for a dynamic and creative record.

Wrong Dream was created with a purposeful mindset, resulting in a focused and deliberate approach to their music-making process. Led by Schellenberg’s disciplined writing style, the band finished with a product that exceeded their expectations. The final track, “Empty Husk,” showcases Tunic’s ability to create powerful and beautiful music.

Tunic will be touring North America in 2023 and bassist Tomas Ingham is joining them as a full-time member. They’ll be at The Aquarium in Fargo on May 3rd with Disappear Forever, Viator, and Germ Circus.
