Earth Week Events Planned Throughout Fargo, Moorhead, & West Fargo

The Cities of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo and Dilworth invite residents to celebrate Earth Week April 16-22 by participating in a variety of green, earth-friendly activities throughout the metro.

The City of Fargo Poster Contest ‘Helping the Earth’

The City of Fargo hosted a poster contest at Jefferson Elementary School, with the theme “Recycle Right.” The winning classroom will get to have lunch with Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney. The poster will also be featured on a billboard in Fargo the month of May, sponsored by The City of Fargo and MinnKota EnviroServices.

MATBUS – Get Your ‘Can’ on the Bus

Celebrate Earth Week with MATBUS and Get Your “Can” on the Bus from Monday, April 17, to Saturday, April 22, you can ride MATBUS fixed route vehicles for free when you recycle one empty aluminum can on the bus. At the end of the week, all collected cans will be recycled, with the proceeds donated to the Homeward Animal Shelter.

Join us for a tour of the new Resource Recovery Center (RRC) following the Mayoral Press Conference (scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.) on Friday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at 3322 15th Ave. N. in Moorhead, MN. Facility tours will showcase the commercial garbage tipping floor, household hazardous waste facility, public recycling and garbage drop-off and the reuse room.

Clay County is proud to continue to provide residents with daily opportunities to live sustainably. On this Earth Day, we would like to highlight our education programs and recycling programs. Speakers are available to visit with groups from preschoolers through Red Hat Ladies regarding reducing, reusing and recycling in Clay County.

On Saturday, April 22, stop by the Clay County Solid Waste booth at the Party for the Planet at the Red River Zoo.

Make Your Own Compost Tumbler Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, at 6 p.m. Participants will create a resilient yard to sustain the Red River by making your own compost tumbler. In addition to building your own compost tumbler to take home, this workshop includes a presentation to learn the basics of composting and how to construct various composting systems. Come prepared to carry home an empty 55-gallon compost tumbler. Fee: $59 ($54 for Moorhead residents) and includes supplies. River Keepers Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 19, at 5:30 p.m. at Dakota Medical Foundation. All are invited to attend this free event where awards will be presented, and new board members elected. There will be a special program to learn about River Keepers youth education.

Find River Keepers at the Red River Zoo on Saturday, April 22, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the Earth Day event, featuring a variety of conservation activity stations, environmental demonstrations and educational presentations.

MSUM’s Sustainable Students Association

Students for Sustainability event will take place on Thursday, April 20, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at CMU Sungarden Lounge at MSUM. Free activities will include rock painting, an oceanarium touch pool, plants for sale and more.

MinnKota Recycling is paying a premium price for all aluminum cans, $0.55 per pound for 1-99 pounds and, if residents have over 100 pounds, MinnKota is offering $0.58 per pound. For anything in excess of 500 pounds, $0.60 per pound will be offered. In addition to aluminum, MinnKota pays for select recyclables. All sites purchase plastic bottles, steel & tin cans and sorted paper (including magazines and newspapers) for $.02 per pound. Visit MinnKota Recycles online to learn more about hours and locations.

Facility tours will be given, showcasing the commercial garbage tipping floor, household hazardous waste facility, public recycling and garbage drop-off and the reuse room.

Several other events have been scheduled around the community by various organizations, providing an opportunity for residents to learn more about protecting the environment and encouraging people to live green every day.
