Fargo Commissioner John Strand to Serve on National Human Development Committee

Strand will provide strategic direction and guidance during one-year elected term

Fargo City Commissioner John Strand has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2023 Human Development federal advocacy committee. Commissioner Strand was elected to a one-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities on issues involving social services, children and learning, poverty and income support, employment and workforce development, equal opportunity, education, Social Security and seniors, individuals with disabilities, public health care, mental health parity, and immigration reform.

Fargo Mayor Dr. Timothy Mahoney states “The NLC is an organization comprised of leaders that are focused on improving the quality of life for all of those around them. Commissioner Strand will be an outstanding representative for our community, and we are proud to have him representing the Upper Midwest.”

As a member of NLC’s Human Development committee, Commissioner Strand will play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities, towns, and villages before Congress, with the administration, and at home. The leadership of this year’s committee will consist of Chair Steve Williams, Mayor of Huntington, WV; Vice Chair Adriana Rocha Garcia, Councilmember, San Antonio, TX; and Vice Chair Doreen Garlid, Councilmember, Tempe, AZ.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are a key tool for gathering insights directly from the communities that our members serve,” said NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Washington. “I am excited to have Commissioner Strand serve on the Human Development committee and look forward to working with him to ensure every city, town, and village in this nation has the resources they need to thrive.”

Fargo City Commissioner John Strand remarked “It’s an absolute honor to sit at the table on a National League of Cities federal committee to help shape policy for cities, big and small, across the country. Human Development issues are close to my heart, to say the least.”
