Promoter Jade Presents has announced that the experimental metal band Baroness will make a stop on their “Your Baroness Tour” at The Hall at Fargo Brewing on Sunday, November 14, 2021. Tickets for the show will go on sale on Friday, October 1 at 10 a.m.
Baroness is from Savannah, Georgia, an the original members grew up together in Lexington, Virginia. The band is fronted by vocalist, guitarist and founder John Baizley. Baroness’ rhythm section is drummer Sebastian Thomson and jazz-honed bassist Nick Jost. The band has absorbed guitarist Gina Gleason, whose résumé includes playing with Cirque du Soleil and jamming with both Smashing Pumpkins and Carlos Santana. Gleason’s voice harmonizes with Baizley and Jost, bringing a new tone to the band.
The Grammy-nominated band returned in 2019 with their most ambitious work to date, their fifth album Gold & Grey. The album spills past genre barriers, their anthemic alt-metal hooks ricocheting between the circuitous twists of prog and jazz, the moody swirls of space-rock and noise and the hypnotic pulses of trip-hop and 20th Century minimalism.
“This is the clearest representation of the artistic vision I have for the band that we’ve ever done,” says Baizley. “I’m surprised that we got as far with it as we did.”
Baizley sees the diverse, adventurous album as a “lateral step” from the streamlined, immediate guitar-rock of the band’s last release, “Purple”, championed by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and L.A. Weekly as one of the best metal albums of 2015. “Gold & Grey” works like a melodic puzzle, melodies and harmonic ideas borrowed, repurposed and reinterpreted. Lyrics are full of sonic Easter eggs; unorthodox prog is hidden inside the most accessible songs; tunes emerge from swirling chaos and dense layers of sound.
The band returned to the studio in late 2020 for an upcoming album. Baizley has said the band has nearly 30 songs written for the record, telling Metal Sucks in September 2020: “We started doing Zoom meetings every Monday night, and mostly that’s because we’ve been writing since March or April. We’re talking about new stuff we’re doing, which is all file sharing, all trading elements of songs, and [we’re] hoping when we get together that they congeal.”
