Several area non-profits will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Minnesota’s ratification of the 19th Amendment, the constitutional amendment legalizing women’s suffrage, with a pie social and program at the Comstock House on Sunday, September 8, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Organizers from the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County and the League of Women Voters of the Red River Valley already collaborated on a centennial celebration marking the amendment’s passage from the U.S. Senate on June 4, 1919, and they will continue with another centennial event at Bonanzaville marking North Dakota’s ratification of the amendment on December 1, 1919.
Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County executive director Maureen Kelly Jonason has been eager to shine a light on the work of early suffragists, noting their lengthy struggles and the tremendous significance of what they accomplished. “The 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote after a contentious, 52-year-old public battle deserves our reverent and celebratory commemoration. No single piece of legislation more dramatically changed American women’s lives over time than the 19th Amendment,” she said.
An outdoor social on the Comstock House lawn will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a performance from the Hartford Street Brass Band. Coffee, tea, champagne, and pie will be served, and lawn games and house tours will be offered. A 2:00 p.m. program will highlight local elected women. Former Moorhead councilwoman and Minnesota congresswoman Diane Wray Williams will offer a keynote address.
Admission and refreshments are free.
