After a long winter, it’s safe to say we’re all ready for a warm getaway.
Let the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra whisk you away to the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean without the hassle of airline travel with its “Sunny Getaway” performance this weekend at NDSU Festival Concert Hall!
All of the music in “Sunny Getaway” is inspired by tropical climates, including pieces that feature FMSO principal percussionist Kenyon Williams on the Caribbean steel pan drum, “Italian Symphony” by Mendelssohn, “In the South” by Edward Elgar and more.

“Danzon No. 2,” the first piece of the concert, will feature the combined forces of the FM Symphony and the FM Area Youth Symphonies in a side-by-side performance. The piece is a “hot and spicy” piece by Mexican composer Arturo Marquez, says FMSO Executive Director Linda Boyd.
“This concert is not only a much-needed tropics-inspired musical treat after a long cold winter — it’s also a perfect program for a first-time concertgoer,” Boyd says.
Boyd is looking forward to hearing Williams on the steel pan drum, an instrument that originated in Trinidad and Tobago.
“Their mellow ringing sound instantly evokes sand, waves, and swaying palm trees,” she adds.
Mmmmm, we can already feel the warmth!
“Sunny Getaway” performances are at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at NDSU Festival Concert Hall. Beverage service is available in the lobby before each concert and during intermission. Concert conductor Christopher Zimmerman will also give a free pre-concert talk in the adjacent recital hall just off the lobby 45 minutes before each performance.
Tickets are $14-18 for students, $30-38 for adults and can be purchased at www.fmsymphony.org or by calling 701-478-3676. $5 student rush tickets (ID required) will also be available are the door an hour before each concert.
