The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) is offering Buy One, Get One Free admission to “Last Call,” their closing reception on Saturday, January 20, in celebration of the two-year exhibition of Wet & Dry: Alcohol in Clay County, 1871-1937.
The reception will include three hour-long presentations from HCSCC’s Mark Peihl and Markus Krueger on the history and legacy of alcohol in our community. Krueger will discuss Wild West Clay County at 1:00PM; Peihl will discuss Moorhead saloons at 2:00PM; and Krueger will return at 3:00PM to discuss Clay County’s Prohibition Era. The presentations will be followed by a guided tour of Wet & Dry at 4:00PM. Light refreshments including local beer from Junkyard Brewing Company and non-alcoholic Temperance-Era cocktails will be available at a cash bar in the Hjemkomst Gallery. General admission for the reception will be offered as Buy One, Get One Free. HCSCC members will receive free admission.
Wet & Dry: Alcohol in Clay County, 1871-1937 explores the role of alcohol in both Fargo-Moorhead and Clay County at-large, from Moorhead’s Wild West inception on the border of the Northern Pacific and dry Dakota Territory, through the region’s booming saloon industry and Prohibition bootlegging. The exhibition will be disassembled February 7, 2018, following a two-year exhibition; its place in Heritage Hall will be taken by HCSCC’s upcoming exploration of life in the Red River Valley 100 years ago, War, Flu, & Fear: World War I and Clay County. An opening reception for that exhibition is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13, from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.
