The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County (HCSCC) is proud to present the first Viking Connection Visiting Master Artist as an installment of the evening lecture series, Parlor Talks. Daniel Serra, a Swedish Culinary Archaeologist and the author of An Early Meal: A Viking Age Cookbook and Culinary Odyssey, will share his research into Viking Age nutrition and serve samples showcasing the methods and recipes he’s uncovered in his work.

As an installment of Parlor Talks, admission to his presentation will include museum tours, local food, and local beer from member-sponsors Drekker Brewing Company. Serra will be cooking the light meal himself, which will include kettleworm (Viking Age sausage), birka (flatbread), and a vegetable dish.
His presentation comes on the heels of a two-week tour of Minnesota during which he’s demonstrated his work at Scandinavian Hjemkomst & Midwest Viking Festival, the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, and Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji. His tour here was made possible by funds from Viking Connection, a new HCSCC program working to preserve and share the arts and histories of Viking Age Europe throughout the Upper Midwest. As a culinary archaeologist, he works to uncover and replicate Viking cooking and nutrition habits and debunk historical inaccuracies, like the belief that lutefisk is thoroughly Norwegian (the oldest recipe he’s found for the dish comes from 14th-century France).
