More than Half a Million Dollars Awarded to Local Nonprofits by FM Area Foundation

The FM Area Foundation has awarded its 2021 community grants in the areas of Arts, Culture & Creativity; Basic Human Needs; Community Building; Education; and Women & Children. Also, this year, in partnership with the City of Fargo, $100,000 was designated for grants to New American organizations or to organizations primarily serving Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.

A focus for this year’s grant round was to provide nonprofits with general operating funds–allowing organizations to direct the funding toward their greatest needs. The focus on general operating grants continues from 2020, when flexible funding was crucial for many nonprofits.

“As the community foundation serving Cass and Clay counties, our goal is to respond to local nonprofit needs to create a vibrant community full of opportunities for everyone. One way we do this is by providing grants for general operations, a form of funding that can be difficult for nonprofits to secure, yet imperative for the success of an organization,” said Lexi Oestreich, Program Director.

The Foundation’s community grants are funded by unrestricted and field of interest gifts that have been given to the community foundation throughout its 61-year history. Nonprofits apply to one of the focus areas through a competitive grant process. Grant applications are evaluated by a volunteer grants committee and Foundation staff members and approved by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

This year, $502,400 was awarded to 79 local organizations.
