DESCRIPTION:Kerianne Lawson presents\, “Women and Economic Freedom” in the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop. This event is free and open to all members of the NDSU community and the public. The workshop format includes a 40-minute presentation followed by audience Q&A. After the presentation\, light food and refreshments will be served in the Challey School of Music Atrium. \nWhat is the talk about? \nIt is well documented that economic freedom improves well-being in a variety of ways. However\, there are gender disparities in economic freedom. In many countries around the world\, women are prevented from having the same economic freedoms as men. When women are granted the same economic opportunities and freedoms as men\, it unlocks a multitude of benefits for all. \nWho is Kerianne Lawson? \nKerianne Lawson is a scholar at the Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth with the Center for the Study of Public Choice and Private Enterprise and an assistant professor of economics in the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics at North Dakota State University. She teaches undergraduate courses on real estate\, microeconomics\, and math economics. Her research interests include economic freedom\, crime and civil unrest\, and electricity reliability. Her work on the expansion of property rights in South Africa sheds light on the charitable work done by the Khaya Lam Project and its role in deterring crime\, encouraging investment\, and creating opportunities for entrepreneurship. Dr. Lawson also conducts research on the importance of economic freedom at the local\, state\, and national level\, and how it relates to political freedom and economic growth. \nWhat is the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop? \nThe Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop invites internationally renowned scholars and speakers from across the country to present research and engage in discussion with the NDSU community. The series focuses on solutions and policies that contribute to opportunity\, innovation\, and individual and societal flourishing. The workshop is available as a one-credit course (BUSN 491/690) for undergraduate and graduate students. In Lend Me A Soprano\, it’s 1934\, and the clever and combustible Lucille Wiley\, Manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company\, is ready to welcome world-class soprana Elena Firenzi\, for her one-night only starring role in Carmen. Alas\, Elena arrives late\, her impassioned husband Pasquale has a fit of jealousy\, and it remains to be seen whether Mrs. Wiley’s mousey but determined assistant Jo can save the day.
