SUMMARY:Lecture: Green (Fog) with Envy: Hitchcock and the Erotic
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Gregory Carlson as he engages in lively conversation with his colleague Dr. Richard Gilmore\, author of the book “Hitchcock as Philosopher of the Erotic.” The professors will discuss Gilmore’s concept of the erotic spark in several popular movies from the Master of Suspense\, including the 1958 masterpiece “Vertigo\,” starring James Stewart and Kim Novak. Gilmore postulates that for Hitchcock\, the notion of the erotic is a process of mutual\, reciprocal creation of the personality of the other person. Longtime cinephiles Carlson and Gilmore both teach in the interdisciplinary film studies program at Concordia College. \nThe evening will begin with a reception and refreshments with Drs. Carlson and Gilmore’s lecture to follow at 6:30. Free and open to the public. \nThis event is made possible with the generous support of Naomi RaMona Schliesman Artistry and Consulting \nAbout your lecturers: \nDr. Gregory Carlson is the chair of Communication Studies and Theatre Art and the director of the film studies minor at Concordia College. He is also the film editor of the High Plains Reader\, co-founder of the North Dakota Film Society\, the Projects Producer of the Fargo Film Festival\, and a member of the Fargo Theatre’s Board of Directors and the Online Film Critics Society. \nDr. Richard Gilmore teaches in the Philosophy department at Concordia College and specializes in American philosophy\, philosophy and film\, and the work of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He frequently contributes essays to edited volumes and is the author of many books\, including “Searching for Wisdom in Movies\,” “Doing Philosophy at the Movies\,” and “Emerson as Philosopher: Postmodernism and Beyond.”

They are threatened with salary withdrawal and the sack. Still\, they refuse. In a desperate attempt to break them\, the Nazi government arrests 1000 male teachers and sends them to prison camps\, 300 miles above the Arctic Circle. The education system is in chaos and now the battle begins.\nJon Seal’s documentary weaves together archive footage\, first-hand testimony and the skillful animation of Herlov Amland’s poignant drawings to tell this gripping story to an international audience for the first time. The Teacher’s Protest is a sad\, tender and uplifting documentary exploring a completely different kind of war story – an inspiring tale of passive resistance\, where the heroes fight without weapons and still win. \nJoin us for a free screening of this poignant documentary (run time: 80 minutes) with discussion to follow.
