Weaving with the Nome Schoolhouse

We’re welcoming our friends from the historic Nome Schoolhouse to The 1889 for a one‑of‑a‑kind felting and weaving experience inspired by their beloved schoolhouse gym walls. This hands‑on workshop blends heritage, texture, and creativity as you learn the art of gym wall weaving — a nostalgic craft with a modern, cozy twist.

What You’ll Create

You’ll begin with a pre‑warped loom (about 9″ x 15″), ready for you to jump right in. After learning a few approachable weaving techniques from the Nome team, you’ll design and weave your very own mini gym wall, using the same four signature colors found in the original Nome Schoolhouse.

It’s a project that’s both meaningful and meditative — a little slice of North Dakota history you can hang proudly at home.

What’s Included

Each participant receives a Gym Wall Weaving Kit, complete with:

• 4 colors of wool roving for weaving
• Use of a pre‑warped loom during class
• Step‑by‑step guidance from the Nome Schoolhouse fiber artists

If you fall in love with the process (and you just might), looms will be available for purchase after class for $30 so you can keep creating.
