Spirits Class – Gin

Since humans have been making spirits, they have been taking advantage of the extractive qualities of ethanol – that is, the fact that you can easily infuse it with a multitude of flavors. Out of all of these flavored spirits, the one that has achieved the most worldwide success is undoubtedly gin. Descended from the Dutch genever, gin is an English spirit, usually made from a neutral grain base and distilled with various botanicals, one of which must be Juniper. From this simple base, the modern world of distilling has spawned a kaleidoscopic array of spirits.

In this class, Evan Christie will explore the world of gin today. Expect to taste spirits in classic styles like London Dry and Old Tom but also a host of new styles of gin. Some gins now focus heavily on the botanicals of specific regions far from the spirits’ northern European home. Others seek to emphasize exotic flavor profiles or even fit in particular types of cocktails. Through all this you will taste and learn about the world’s favorite flavored spirit.
