Cocktail Class – Ingredient Inspiration: Aquavit

For cocktail enthusiasts, there is a common problem: the “What Else Can I Do With This” bottle. Maybe you buy a bottle to make a specific drink but do not know other ways to use it, or maybe you were tempted by the exotic flavor of a new ingredient, but once you acquired it, you are stumped how to use it in a cocktail. It is precisely to address this issue of liquors languishing in your cabinet that we have concocted this series of cocktail classes – Ingredient Inspiration! In each class, we will explore a different ingredient, focusing especially on those that are most famous for a single cocktail, and show you how they can be used in a broad range of libations.

In this class, we will explore that Scandinavian specialty, aquavit. Though certainly enjoyable alone, consumed ice cold with a smörgåsbord of salty snacks, aquavit also has great potential in cocktails. Yet much of this potential has not been realized outside of cocktail bars, as aquavit cocktails have tended not to join the pantheon of classics. While similar to gin, the botanicals in aquavit can be harder to mix with; unlike gin, there is also no single flavor that binds the category together – caraway, dill, and fennel are frequent flavorings, but none is required, and their prominence varies by region and producer.
