What is Oktoberfest?
The celebration Drekker is hosting is part of a global tradition modeled after the original Oktoberfest, the world’s largest folk and beer festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.
Oktoberfest dates back to October 12, 1810, commemorating the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The initial festivities in Munich lasted nearly a week and concluded with a public horse race on a field that was later named Theresienwiese (“Therese’s Meadow”) in the bride’s honor.
The celebration was such a success that it was repeated annually, gradually evolving to include an agricultural show, carnival booths, rides, and, eventually, large brewery-sponsored beer tents. Over time, the festival was moved forward into September to take advantage of Bavaria’s warmer late-summer weather, though it typically concludes on the first Sunday in October.
