The Head and The Heart – “Rivers & Roads” (The Doe Bay Sessions)

This concert is sure to be a highlight of the summer for fans of The Head and the Heart’s signature brand of folk-pop. The Seattle band has been on a roll lately, selling out Red Rocks Amphitheater for the seventh time and headlining tours with The Revivalists and Father John Misty. They’ve also released critically acclaimed albums, with their 2011 self-titled debut achieving platinum status thanks to hits like “Rivers and Roads,” “Down in the Valley,” and “Lost in My Mind.”

The Head and The Heart band members met each other through a series of open mic nights that took place at Conor Byrne pub in Ballard, Seattle. Josiah Johnson had moved to Seattle from Southern California to pursue his graduate studies, and Jonathan Russell had recently moved from Richmond, Virginia. They were joined by keyboardist Kenny Hensley, who had also moved to Seattle to work on musical score-writing, and Charity Rose Thielen, who had returned from studying abroad in Paris. Drummer Tyler Williams became part of the band after hearing a demo of their song “Down In The Valley”. Chris Zasche, who was bartending at Conor Byrne Pub and playing in other Seattle bands, completed the original lineup.

The Head and The Heart swiftly gained popularity with their self-titled debut album. They sold self-made copies of the album in denim sleeves at their shows, which quickly ran out of stock at local record stores. The band was soon approached by multiple record labels and managers, but they eventually signed with Sub Pop in November 2010. Sub Pop remastered the album and included a studio version of their concert closer “Rivers and Roads,” along with a re-recorded version of “Sounds Like Hallelujah.” The album was then re-released on both CD and vinyl LP. Since then, The Head and The Heart has continued to create soulful music that resonates with their global audience, releasing several more albums and captivating listeners worldwide.
