Indigenous Peoples Day

Fargo-Moorhead Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration Events Planned for Monday, October 10

The Native American Commission and Indigenous Association will co-host an Indigenous Peoples’ Day breakfast kickoff event on Monday, October 10 which will include a meal, speakers and the presentation of the Native American Commission’s prestigious Gladys Ray Award. Breakfast will be served from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m., with a program scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The event will take place at the Indigenous Association, located at 720 1st Avenue North in Fargo. This event is free and open to the public.

Following the breakfast kickoff event, an educational “Lunch and Learn” will begin at 12 p.m. at the Indigenous Association. During this event, the documentary “Basketball, Water and the Lost City of Elbowoods” will demonstrate how the effects of the Garrison Dam flooding on the Fort Berthold Reservation has had negative impact on the health and wellbeing of Native communities today; and how some people continue to experience very challenging health or related impediments as a result. Panelists will discuss how an understanding of historical traumas supports Native communities and ways to be more effective in engaging people by providing culturally grounded services. This event is free to attend and is geared toward individuals who work with Indigenous people. A CEU credit of .3 has been approved for North Dakota social workers and NBCC counselors. For more details related to the CEU and to pay the $10 registration fee, visit the registration page.
