When I think of drinking in downtown Fargo, many great places and beverages come to mind. But when I think of the quintessential downtown Fargo drink, my mind immediately conjures up only one. That drink can be had by moseying through saloon doors and bellying up at one of the two bars (or at a booth or table) in Rooter’s Bar. Ask for a Root Beer and you won’t be disappointed. Ask for a couple and look into finding a sober ride home. A Rooter’s Root Beer isn’t a root beer or a beer. It’s a vodka drink, but it tastes a lot like its namesake.
We went to Rooter’s late on a Thursday afternoon for the sole purpose of having a root beer. My husband had never had one and was skeptical at first. We were actually downtown for a Broadway Square event, but the sun hit that large Rooter’s sign just right, and I knew it was time for him to try one.
It was early, and the bar was quiet. We felt comfortable there even though it was more of a college bar. As soon as we sat, the bartender took our drink orders. Both bartenders checked in with us a few times, but we were only there for a one-and-done. Still, we enjoyed checking out the trophies and memorabilia and loved the dark woodwork everywhere. I can see us stopping in again for an after-work drink or to check out their Karaoke.
