1 Million Cups Fargo to Feature Educational Leader and ND’s First Billionaire at Living Legends Day

Fargo N.D. – The third annual ‘Living Legends Day’ edition of 1 Million Cups Fargo takes place on Wednesday, September 25th from 9:15 am – 10:15 am at the Stage at Island Park, and will feature Sister Thomas Welder, President Emerita of the University of Mary, and Gary Tharaldson, hospitality entrepreneur and North Dakota’s first billionaire.

Sister Thomas Welder served as the President of the University of Mary from 1978 until 2009. During her time as President, she added undergraduate and graduate degree programs in cities across North Dakota, and grew enrollment from 925 to nearly 3,000 in 2004. She lives, serves, and leads by example and is an educational leader and inspiration to many in the region.

Gary Tharaldson is a hospitality entrepreneur, acquiring his first Super 8 Motel in 1982. He has owned over 350 properties across the U.S. and has spent decades innovating the hospitality industry, building a reputation as a master of cutting costs without hampering the guest experience. In June 2019, after a Forbes net worth analysis, Gary became North Dakota’s first (and only) billionaire.

On top of hearing about their entrepreneurial journeys, 1 Million Cups ‘Living Legends Day’ will also feature Officer Micheal Bloom who will perform a random act of art during the event. Officer Bloom began his role as a Community Trust Officer with the Fargo Police Department in the fall of 2015 and began rapping in uniform in 2016 as a way to connect with youth in the community.
